Upon visiting the Special Collections archive at the University library, I came across an image that appeared to be an advertisement. While observing the image, not only did I realize every employee pictured was a woman, but they were also dressed in what I consider mainstream women’s clothing colored in various bright colors. The caption assigned to the image described the clothing in a similar way, but it claimed that the vibrant colors were meant to create a “cheerful” mode. In my opinion, the portrayal of women only in that particular clothing implies that maybe they were catering to a specific audience… Possibly men?
Why men? Don’t women enjoy a cheerful mood? What is it about the image that leads you to thinking “mainstream” when you view the clothing?
I specifically said men because dresses and bright colors can be associated with femininity. Unless a woman has internalized gender expectations, the reasons for enforcing femininity would be to appease the larger consumer base (mostly men or nuclear families). I hope that explains my point! 🙂
Solid thinking here. I wonder what sources might help you draw more confident conclusions?
